The words are not the empathy. It's not what you say. Whatever words get me there, I use. But where I put my attention is just there. If the person is addicted to the words, I'll use those words.
However: I avoid any connection of forces outside of themselves to their feelings. If I'm going to connect with the pain I mediate it through a need.
