Purpose

To look at what needs people have from, and for, the group, and begin to identify strategies to meet them in future sessions.

Process

Here's how we went about it. There were roughly two sections to the evening. In the first we followed a process to identify needs and strategies. In the second we discussed how we wanted to continue.

first section

Here's the process we used to uncover needs and strategies in the first section.

  1. wants Each person wrote the things they felt were important for themselves and the group, by themselves, on stickers. One item per sticker. This went on until everyone felt their significant points were down.
  2. display All these notes were put up on one display board.
  3. grouping We talked about these items and moved the stickers around as common and related groupings seemed to appear.
  4. factoring As groupings appeared, we moved them onto separate boards. In the end four rough clusterings appeared. The result is shown below.

The captions are roughly indicative of the content of each group. The colours are not relevant - just which pad a given person had. Clicking on the thumbnail will take you to a larger version, and if you want to follow the link there you can get at version large enough to read each note - but be aware those are large images.

The next step was to look at each grouping in turn, and identify the fundamental needs behind each, and strategies for meeting them.

second section

At this point it was felt a longer period of reflection was required to fully connect with the needs behind what was being discussed, and after some discussion we decided to revisit each grouping in turn on subsequent meetings.

Summary and State

At the end of the meeting, we decided to:

  • continue the process by looking at each grouping in turn at future sessions.
  • start by connecting with the underlying needs for one grouping (shaping).
  • let everyone know where we were up to, and invite responses.

Appendix : Groupings - detail

Here are the words from the stickers in the groupings at the meeting. You may wish to offer some more of your own. The headings are rough, and of course there is some overlap. We did not get around to separating out the needs in each grouping, from strategies to meet them.
